“It’s not how many times you get knocked down that count, it’s how many times you get back up.” George Custer
It’s been a few weeks since I have written an article.
Well that’s not completely true, I started writing a pretty intense article a week ago, got interrupted half way through and haven’t found the fire to pick that specific one back up.
I have set out to write one article a week for…. well forever.
I enjoy writing a lot. It helps me think. It helps me lay things out and really express feeling and thought. I think it helps me connect with others.
Needless to say, it is an important part of what I do.
I find it funny that I struggle to find time to do it.
The reality is, as much as I love it, I don’t view it through the lens of importance like I would like to… or probably should. It doesn’t hold the same priority currently as spending time with my family, teaching classes, having meetings with my staff, doing things for the business, recording my podcast.
I believe it stems from two things
- I don’t schedule it like I should. I am pretty unorganized, but if I put something in my calendar, I am pretty good about it. I need to make it a point to schedule time to write AND stick to it. Don’t let anyone or anything interrupt that time.
- There’s no one holding me accountable or I feel accountable for when it comes to writing. My family feels the loss if I don’t spend time with them. My staff and business partners feel the loss if I don’t hold up my end of the bargain. I know many people have complimented my writing, but it’s pretty disconnected so I don’t feel that same responsibility.
These are two things I intend to change. Writing may just be a hobby for me, but it is also part of my career, and I would like to give it the respect it deserves.
I believe it helps me grow as a leader, improve as a teacher, and I would like to think it brings value to others.
So, I am going to schedule specific times for me to write AND I brought in a good friend to help me organize and post articles…. so now, if I don’t write, I have someone to call me on my shit for not meeting a deadline hahaha.
The reality is, if something feels right, you have to stick to it. And if you happen to get lost along the way or fall off the proverbial horse, all you have to do is get back on.
What habits have you fallen away from? What passions are you avoiding?
No better time to get back on track than right now.
Be good, train hard, stay safe.
